Second Series of Ashtanga Yoga for Advanced Students with Pranayama Study and Practice

Second Series Advanced with Pranayama is your gateway to deep personal growth in Ashtanga yoga, through familiarity with advanced elements of yoga practice and philosophy.


Ashtanga yoga comprises six series, and in this class we will reach a new level of familiarity with the Second Series and also begin to practice asanas from the Third (or Advanced) Series, called sthira bhaga.


Practice of the Primary Series of Ashtanga yoga allows us to increase our awareness of and identify energetic blocks; from the Second Series onward we move deeper into working the nadis system: the channels in the physical and energetic body that carry the prana – the energy whose positive flow is responsible for physical and mental balance. The nadis are considered analogous to the nervous system, and they connect the chakras (energy centers) to one another and to physical organs. Practice of the Second and Third Series releases and opens the granthis – energetic knots along the nadis which are responsible for many of our personality weaknesses.
This class will focus on deepening understanding of the elements of the Second Series: arching the spine backwards, building flexibility, strengthening vulnerable joints (knees, shoulders, elbows, etc.), enhancing balance through floor poses and inversions. All this, of course, is accompanied by the practice of ujjayi pranayama and is based on Patanjali’s yoga theory combined with the intelligent application of the principles of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga.
This is a special class intended for students who have already participated in Second Series Beginners with Pranayama. It builds on physical and mental abilities acquired in the practice of the Primary and Second Series and allows direct and powerful work on the nadis and chakra system.
