Welcome to the Yoga Shala – your home for yoga practice, study, and teacher training.
We have been practicing, studying, and teaching yoga since 1985, and we invite you to join us at the oldest Ashtanga yoga center in the country.
Who are we?
Gilad and Miri Harouvi founded Ashtanga Yoga – The Israeli Center in 1985. After 19 years of sadhana (practice for achievement), studying, researching, and working in the field of yoga, they established the Yoga Shala (Mishkan HaYoga) in 2004, the direct successor of the Israeli Center.
Under the direction of founders and senior teachers Gilad and Miri Harouvi the Shala has evolved into a center of professionalism and excellence. We offer a diverse array of yoga classes tailored to dozens of students, as well as training courses for yoga instructors, teachers, and senior teachers. In practicing and teaching yoga we maintain a balance between preserving the ancient yoga tradition and adapting it to the Israeli mentality and to the physical and energetic needs of each student.
Why Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga?
As you know, there is a wide variety of yoga styles, techniques, and centers available today. We at the Yoga Shala have chosen to specialize in Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, one of the original systems of practice, which owes much to the work of two individuals: the famous master Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya of Chennai (Madras), south India, who was one of the greatest yoga teachers in the world, and Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, south India, who preserved the system and made it one of the most popular in the world today.
Ashtanga has introduced the energetic and dynamic element into the world of yoga practice. It is this element of vinyasa – the coordination of breath and movement – that makes this practice so effective on the physical, emotional, and consciousness levels. Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga consists of set sequences of asanas (poses) performed using four basic principles to create a safe and aware practice.
Contrary to the common view, Ashtanga is not all about heat, sweating, aerobics, and fitness. We at the Yoga Shala rely on the classical yoga tradition according to which any yoga practice is based on the balance between breath, postures, and the application of the yoga philosophy of consciousness, depending on the ability level of the student. In basing our teaching on yoga darshana – the classical yoga system of Patanjali – we thus offer a rich and intensive practice in line with the yoga tradition.
